New Auckland disaster alert app launched

By: Sam Thompson | Latest Auckland News | Tuesday September 18 2012 15:38

A new citywide disaster alert system has been launched in Auckland.

It's a smartphone app designed to alert Aucklanders to incoming tsunamis and other disasters and emergencies.

Chairman of Civil Defence and Emergency Management Michael Goudie says if an incident happens the app has three levels of severity measure.

"For example if a high severity comes through it'll actually give a little siren off on your phone. You can bring it up, it'll have all the information, threats and links to more useful information and maybe perhaps things you should be doing."

Michael Goudie says that information can be shared among friends through other social media as well like like Facebook or Twitter.
