PM expresses doubts over inner city rail project

| Latest Auckland News | Thursday August 9 2012 11:25

The Prime Minister says he's reluctant to support Auckland's proposed inner city rail link because it's all pain and not enough gain.

Auckland mayor Len Brown's pet project is expected to cost $2.86 billion.

John Key says central government is hesitant to lend its support - or its funds.

"The advice that we've had and that we have seen so far is it doesn't stack up. What they say is more people may well use the rail, but they'll almost certainly come off the buses and it's hugely expensive. It's billions of dollars," he told Newstalk ZB's Leighton Smith.

Mr Key says he's not sure the inner city rail link would even improve traffic flows in Auckland.
