Commercial reality has beaten moral outrage when it comes to registering objections to the government's pokies-for-a-convention-centre deal. Auckland councillor Cathy Casey put a notice of motion to the council this morning that it protest the move. However, the vote failed by 12 votes to nine. Some of the other councillors say this is something that is needed for New Zealand and Auckland as well. They say it will bring in a lot of high value delegates, and is something that the business community has been asking for for a long time. Councillors also pointed out it's not up to the council to interfere.
They have said it's up to the government to decide because it's going to be a national convention centre for the whole of New Zealand, not just for Auckland so it's actually not the Auckland Council's decision.
