Council, taxis team up to get town-goers home safely

By: Natasha Burling | Latest Auckland News | Wednesday October 31 2012 9:30

The Auckland Council has teamed up with Co-Op taxis to help people get home easier from a night on the town.

It's the latest initiative from the Mayoral Taskforce action plan.

The council is preparing to roll out a pilot scheme for a capped or fixed fare system, which would operate during specific hours on certain nights and use a swipe card with a pre-pay option.

Auckland Mayor Len Brown says the council has got funding for an initial 10,000 cards.

He says it means people will get a significantly discounted taxi fare home in the early hours of the morning rather than hanging around in the city continuing to drink or behaving badly.
