Referee attacked during school rugby final

By: Anna Cross | Latest Auckland News | Monday August 27 2012 6:21

Police and the Auckland Rugby Union are investigating a spectator attack on a referee at a school boy rugby match.

The referee was punched in the face at the end of the the Auckland secondary schools 2B grade final between Auckland Grammar School and De La Salle College on Saturday.

Grammar won the game 6-5.

Auckland Rugby Referees Association chairman, Don Crawford, believes the spectator was a De La Salle supporter.

"It goes in front of the Auckland Rugby Union judicial system. They look at the complaint and then deal with it there with the police.

"It's something we take very harshly. Any attack or abuse of a referee is viewed as the worst type of offence that can happen to any volunteer."

Mr Crawford says the school will also be spoken to so they can try to track down the person responsible.
