Airport funding set to increase tourism between Japan, NZ

By: Philippa Ormrod | Latest Auckland News | Wednesday September 19 2012 7:55

Auckland Airport is hoping extra funding will help to increase tourism between Japan and New Zealand.

The airport has announced it will invest $250,000 in the Japan Innovation Fund and work alongside the Government's recent Hobbit tourism initiative.

Auckland Airport spokesman Glen Wedlock says it's one of those markets where there's great opportunity but we need to do more.

"We started developing markets there three years ago, but unfortunately obviously with the tragic circumstances things had to go on hold. The market was already responding but, a big campaign and programmes around things like the Hobbit will increase New Zealand's awareness and talk-ability."

Glen Wedlock says the Japan Innovation Fund aims to get the Japanese tourist market back up to more than 100,000 visitors each year.
