Mayor encourages public feedback on parking

By: Natasha Burling | Latest Auckland News | Friday June 8 2012 5:21

The mayor of Auckland is encouraging people to have their say on parking charges in the central city.

Auckland Transport wants to charge motorists three to five dollars for the first hour and between five and eight for each hour afterwards, meaning it would cost nearly $30 for four hours' parking.

Len Brown says the appropriate provision of parking in the central city is vital to the lifeblood of the heart of Auckland.

He welcomes the review and is encouraging people who live, work and spend time in the central city to make their views known.

People have until July 1 to give their feedback.

Meanwhile Auckland city employers are outraged over a new parking proposal for the inner city.

Employers and Manufacturers Association CEO Kim Campbell says the proposal is outrageous and will hurt businesses.

He says anyone running a business and looking for people to come shopping, now has another thing conspiring against them.

Mr Campbell says it's hard to see the justification for the quantum leap in prices.
