Farmers buck expectations for lambing season

By: Annabel Reid | Latest Rural News | Tuesday July 17 2012 11:26

Farmers in the south are bucking expectations for the coming lambing season.

Beef and Lamb New Zealand has reported early signs of lower lambing percentages for Southland following the scanning of stock in the region.

But Newstalk ZB's business correspondent Roger Kerr says one Lumsden farmer has scanned 210 percent lambing.

"A number of other prominent Southland farmers (are) also reporting scanning percentages are up on last year, so around the country it appears the sheep went into the winter in pretty good condition."

Roger Kerr says the favourable autumn weather means the ewes are in good shape.
