Tariana Turia offers support to Horan

A hand of support is being offered to newly independent MP Brendan Horan.

Mr Horan has been expelled from New Zealand First's caucus following allegations he stole funds from his late mother.

It's also emerged he used his taxpayer funded cellphone for sports betting

Maori Party Co-leader Tariana Turia says if Mr Horan stays, he'll have some support from her party.

"I know what it's like to be here on your own, and to be isolated, and I wouldn't like to see that happen to him."

Former New Zealand First and now National MP Tau Henare says Winston Peters isn't one to sack someone without having all the facts lined up.

But he says the Brendan Horan case still smacks of a lack of natural justice, because we don't know the details of what he's supposed to have done.

"Unless you publicly have put out there what is wrong, and what he has done wrong, then I think it;s a slippery slope going downhill very, very fast if you allow the leader to sack summarily one of their members."

Brendan Horan is staying on as an independent MP, adamant that claims he stole from his dying mother to fuel a gambling addiction are false.
