Housing minister fefuses to define homelessness

Tensions ran high in parliament today as the Housing Minister refused to define homelessness.

Eighty-two people will spend tonight out in the cold for the "Big Sleepout", to raise awareness of the issue and raise funds for LifeWise.

Labour MP Jacinda Ardern is one of those and today asked minister Nick Smith if someone is counted as being homeless if they live under a bridge, use night shelters or couch surf.

Dr Smith says Housing New Zealand defines people as homeless if they live in a car or a tent.
