Key, Merkel discuss Syria over lunch

By: Barry Soper | Latest Political News | Saturday June 9 2012 6:29

The Prime Minister says German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been praising New Zealand's role in world affairs.

John Key met Ms Merkel for lunch in Berlin.

Various ideas were discussed, including what to do about the deteriorating situation in Syria.

"Which is a terrible situation, absolutely horrible for the people of Syria, everything needs to be done in order to come to political solutions so that finally the people of Syria may be given the necessary security that they need," Ms Merkel says.

Mr Key says they stood on the balcony at the Chancery, and Ms Merkel pointed out where she grew up in East Germany, behind the Berlin Wall.

"She said to me, I was two kilometres away from what's now become home of the parliament of Germany in what is a unified Germany and I would never have believed that was possible."
