Battle for economic credibility ahead of Budget

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Wednesday May 2 2012 18:50

The battle for economic credibility is heating up just three weeks out from the Government's Budget.

Labour MP David Parker is using IMF data showing only Greece and Cyprus have a worse current account deficit than New Zealand to attack the Government's position.

"How can the Prime Minister be taken seriously in his pre-budget speech yesterday titled 'sticking to a plan that's working'?"

However Finance Minister Bill English is hammering Labour for promises it made in 1999 to cut the deficit.

"The Labour party at the time campaigned to halve the current account deficit and they ended up doubling it."
