Parole hearing changes won't breach human rights - Govt

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Thursday September 27 2012 9:35

The Government's confident planned changes to parole hearings won't breach human rights.

It's looking to axe around 800 parole hearings a year by removing hearings for inmates who haven't acknowledged their offending, or made efforts at rehabilitation

Justice Minister Judith Collins indicates the bill is consistent with the Bill of Rights.

"There's no problem in terms of the Bill of Rights because it really does look at unnecessary parole hearings - not in fact stopping people from applying, but they've still got to do something about it."

Judith Collins says the changes could save around a million dollars a year.
