Student loan changes on right track for Govt

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Political News | Thursday September 6 2012 14:59

The Government says changes it's made to access and repayment of student loans are bearing fruit.

Tertiary Education Minister Steven Joyce and revenue Minister Peter Dunne have released new figures on the cost of the student loans scheme.

They say as a result of changes made over the past three years, the amount of money written off on student loans has fallen from 48 cents in the dollar to 39 cents in the dollar.

It means the Government gets back 61 cents for every dollar it lends.

Mr Joyce says the carrying value of student loans increased by over $280 million in the past financial year.
