NZ, USA to present separate marine reserve proposals

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Thursday September 6 2012 16:44

There won't be a joint approach between New Zealand and the United States in creating a marine reserve in Antarctica.

Foreign Minister Murray McCully has confirmed New Zealand will submit a separate proposal to the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources.

He says there had been discussions on putting forward a joint proposal with the USA but it's been decided each country will put forward their own plans.

Mr McCully says the two plans do have common features and a commitment has been made to work closely with the USA on the marine reserve proposal.
