Govt awaits advice on foreign F&P buyout

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Tuesday September 18 2012 7:48

The Government's to wait for advice before being drawn on the merits of a foreign buyout of Fisher and Paykel.

Chinese company Haier is seeking to buy out the firm.

Asked if the Government could potentially intervene to stop the sale, the Prime Minister says he's not seen any advice to that effect.

"This is now subject for the Overseas Investment Office, to look at merits of the application from Haier. I'd prefer to comment when we see their advice to the relevant ministers."

Meanwhile, Labour believes a decision on a buy-out of this scope should be made by ministers, not officials.
