Labour fuming over failure to stop convention centre deal

UPDATED 1:27pm: Labour leader David Shearer has outlined his deep-felt opposition to the SkyCity Convention Centre deal.

Speaking on Radio Rhema, Mr Shearer said SkyCity has been given special privileges that other firms tendering for building the centre had missed out on.

He's also concerned about the 8,000 or more extra people who the Government estimates will have gambling problems as a result of the increase in gambling.

"Those people can't help themselves and SkyCity's making money off those and we have got a convention centre on the backs of those people and I just think that is so terribly wrong."

Mr Shearer wishes there was no such thing as pokie machines.

"I hate those pokie machines, I actually, if I was able to kind of wish them away I would in a moment.

"I think they add nothing to anybody's quality of life, nothing."
