Labour, National opposite views on ports bill

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Thursday September 20 2012 9:35

Labour and National are at opposite ends of the spectrum when it comes to making publicly owned port companies subject to the Official Information Act.

Darien Fenton's looks set to fail to get the numbers to progress her member's bill to enable such a move

The Labour MP says it's about improving accountability and transparency.

"Any political party that prides itself on openness around public owned entities should have no problem supporting this."

But National MP Nick Smith says the bill's not about principle, it's about politics.

"They simply want to re-politicise the management of New Zealand's ports. It shows how left Labour has become in their time in opposition."

The bill will be voted on next month.
