Mana MP Hone Harawira will appear in court next week after being charged for his involvement in a late night protest in Auckland.
He spent about four hours in police cells this morning after parking his car across a driveway, to stop a house removal truck taking a state house from its Glen Innes site.
Fellow protestor John Minto says the Mana Party leader was arrested and charged with failing to remove his vehicle from a roadway.
"He was a model of passive resistance and in the end the police broke the window of the car and hauled him out and towed his car away."
Mr Minto says Mr Harawira wasn't injured. Police went in late last night to take them off the roof of the house, which has been relocated in Mt Wellington. The Tamaki Housing Action Group has been fighting against the removal of houses and eviction of families. It says the move is pulling apart the Glen Innes community for the purpose of privatising state houses. The protesting has been going on for six months - generally they get arrested before being released without charge. Photo: Supplied |
