Green Party critisise rail line closure

By: Aroha Tahau | Latest Political News | Saturday September 1 2012 15:37

KiwiRail and the Government are being criticised by the Green Party on their decision to close the Napier-Gisborne rail line.

The Greens are claiming the closure of the transport link will have a significant impact on the local economy.

Spokesperson for the party Julie Anne Genter says this is another example of this government's backward economics.

"Basically they are putting hundreds of millions of dollars into strengthening and repairing roads where they can take these bigger, heavier trucks, and they are unwilling to come up with a few million to save the strategic rail line. It's just unbelievable."

Julie Anne Genter says, building a comprehensive rail network to move freight is part of a smart solution to our regional transport needs and KiwiRail has turned it's back on developing such an option.
