John Key suggests job hunters look to IT

| Latest Political News | Tuesday September 25 2012 7:38

The hundreds of people who are set to lose their jobs in paper mills, rail workshops and mines around the country have been told by the Prime Minister to head into the IT industry.

John Key insists there are many parts of the economy that are growing rapidly.

"If you take somewhere like the pulp and paper mills, yes, people are buying less newsprint so that has an impact on their business. But every day there's more people being hired in areas like IT, so there's just a change in the way that people engage in the economy."

Labour leader David Shearer is scoffing at that advice.

"I don't see these jobs. I don't believe that those jobs are being created in nearly enough the numbers that are being lost."
