Maurice Williamson's boss says the MP is still tossing up a change of career.
John Key says when the newly minted gay icon's name came up as a possibility for the Auckland mayoralty, he didn't take it overly seriously.
But when Mr Williamson didn't rule it out, he rang him.
"He's genuinely still tossing it up. He's sort of saying well look, he might throw his hat in the ring, he might not. There's a lot of factors to consider.
"I don't think he'd be opposed to doing the job but equally he's got his parliamentary career and he'd need to think all that through."
Meanwhile Auckland's new mayoral candidate thinks he has a chance.
Millionaire businessman John Palino has thrown his hat into the ring.
The restaurateur says people are looking for a change.
John Palino says the council is forcing people to accept the Unitary Plan.
"And I think the people are tired of it. You need to have someone that runs the city like a business and that listens to what the people need as well."
John Palino thinks the Unitary Plan will destroy Auckland.
