Allegations over migrant worker exploitation

By: Katie Bradford-Crozier | Latest Political News | Thursday August 16 2012 12:40

The Labour Minister's demanding answers after allegations migrant workers are being exploited and ripped off.

Small business owners are allegedly offering desperate newcomers to the country jobs at below minimum wage.

Labour MP Darien Fenton says a high level inquiry is needed to look into the issue of a growing number of migrant workers being exploited.

Minister Kate Wilkinson says she will look into the matter further.

"The employee doesn't want to make a complaint because perhaps they might be working illegally, the employer won't let us know if they're breaching the legislation either. So we do rely on the media to a certain extent and others to actually inform us if there are any transgressions happening so that we can investigate."
