Definition of Marriage Amendment Bill passes first reading

New Zealand is a major step closer to opening marriage laws so gay couples can marry.

Labour MP Louisa Wall's marriage equality Bill has secured the numbers to pass its first reading in Parliament.

It passed by a higher than expected margin, 80 votes to 40.
