New employment laws for hiring non union labour before parliament by Christmas

By: Newstalk ZB Staff | Latest Political News | Thursday October 25 2012 17:55

New laws making it easier for employers to employ non union labour and to opt out of collective agreements should be before Parliament by Christmas.

The new law would see wages deducted for low level industrial action and would require parties in all industries to give notice of a strike or lockout.

There would also be time limits set for resolving disputes.

Labour Minister Kate Wilkinson expects resistance from the unions.

"Any time we have employment changes the unions think the sky will fall in, they did with the 90-day trial period that's been really successful and they sky hasn't fallen in."
