Govt under fire for Wellington building eviction

By: Shani Annand-Baron | Latest Political News | Friday May 18 2012 10:00

The Government's coming under fire for being a poor landlord for our most vulnerable.

81 Housing New Zealand tenants have been evicted from their central Wellington building.

The building has been found to be unsafe with the facade at risk of crumbling in an earthquake or in strong winds.

Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirikatene says the building's clearly not up to standard and there's just one group to blame.

"Ultimately it goes back to the minister and his department. I think Housing New Zealand has clearly dropped the ball on this one. To all of a sudden find out that their maintenance program has been deficient on that building is clearly unacceptable."

Mr Tirikatene says he's concerned the building will be demolished and the land sold to the highest bidder, leaving a gap in Wellington's state-housing market.
