Allegations Whanau Ora scheme funded overstayer

By: Katie Bradford-Crozier | Latest Political News | Tuesday November 27 2012 20:32

Allegations have been made in parliament that an overstayer with a history of family violence has received taxpayer funds through the Whanau Ora scheme.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters questioned minister Tariana Turia about the South Canterbury case today.

He wanted to know if it was appropriate that a provider supported this person's case to become a permanent resident who has a history of violence towards women and children, as well as substance abuse.

Tariana Turia says she's aware of the case and the man involved is just one in a family of 18 members.

"This issue was in fact disclosed by the provider immediately that it was discovered and that matter has been dealt with in the appropriate way."
