US concerned with tobacco plain packaging

By: Katie Bradford-Crozier | Latest Political News | Thursday October 11 2012 12:20

The international campaign against our proposed plain packaging of tobacco laws is continuing.

The US Chamber of Commerce has followed in the lead of tobacco companies and sent out statements to New Zealand media, saying it's concerned about the plans.

Vice President for Asia, Tami Overby, says while she's a strong supporter of measures to protect public health, the Chamber remains convinced the measures will not reduce smoking, but instead mandate the elimination of an entire industry's trademarks.

She hopes our Government will weigh up all views during its consultation period and adopt alternatives.
