There's a boost for the Chatham Islands. The Government's to spend $400,000 building five houses there. The Prime Minister is on his first visit to the most remote part of New Zealand, which has a population of 600. Locals are pleading with him for work to be done on expanding fishing quotas and building infrastructure, and John Key admits $400,000 to boost the islands' housing stock is a drop in the bucket compared to what's needed. "Doesn't anchor the jobs and living here is quite expensive because fuel prices are so much more, energy is more expensive - everything's imported. The challenge for this island like it is for so many islands is the cost of getting everything in, and the cost of getting everything out." Photo: John Key (Getty Images) |
