Local government donation laws may change

By: Newstalk ZB staff | Latest Political News | Tuesday May 1 2012 11:38

All signs are that local government electoral donation laws may be in for an overhaul following the John Banks affair.

The Prime Minister's standing firm in the face of allegations Mr Banks labelled donations from Kim Dotcom and SkyCity as anonymous, when he knew where they came from.

John Key says the ACT leader assures him he hasn't broken the law, and he's taking his word on that.

But there may be a case for changing the law because it may be too loose as it is.

"I suspect it is, if its anything like the previous regime that applied for central government, so that might be a genuine case. But again, it's the responsibility of individuals and ministers to comply with the law."
