Maori Party seeks discussion with John Key

The Maori Party says it won't know whether to walk away from the Government, until there's been a discussion with John Key.

It comes after the Prime Minister's comments effectively writing off the Waitangi Tribunal hearing into water rights.

President Pem Bird says they want an explanation as to why he made the comment, which he thinks was calculated and deliberate.

"Is the comment in itself sufficient cause for us to walk away? Once we've had the discussion with Mr Key, I believe it will be via telephone, then we'll assume a position then.

"I think we'd like an explanation as to why he made that comment, but I believe it was calculated and deliberate myself, I don't think he does things without thinking."

John Key has said he's too busy to meet with the party this week.

A Maori Party member says the latest ruction between the party and National could see the end of their arrangement.

Christchurch's Hector Matthews, who was number ten on the Maori Party list in the last election, says National's really starting to irk him but Labour is not much of an alternative.

He says co-leaders Pita Sharples and Tariana Turia will consult with members over whether they should continue supporting the government and it will be a heated debate.

"You never get anyone agreeing, but they try and come to a consensus about whether or not they cut and run or stay. And to date, they've stayed, but it's precarious."
