NZ First, Maori Party at odds over Treaty's future role

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Wednesday January 30 2013 5:30

New Zealand First and the Maori Party are at odds over the role of the Treaty of Waitangi in any future constitution the country may have.

The role of the Treaty is being considered in a formal constitutional review.

Winston Peters says if a constitution is drafted with the Treaty as a cornerstone, the country will have no future.

He says we'll head down a separatist path where people's basic needs won't be addressed.

But Tariana Turia disagrees.

She says the treaty provides us with constitutional code upon which any discussion of nationhood can emerge.
