Japan mounting campaign over territory rights

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Thursday September 6 2012 10:20

Japan is mounting a PR campaign over the territorial rights it believes it has in the Sea of Japan.

Its embassy in Wellington has written to our political staff just days ahead of the upcoming APEC Leaders meeting in Vladivostok.

The letter outlines the claims Japan says it has to the Takeshima Islands, territory it claims South Korea has occupied illegally since 1952.

Japan is calling for the dispute to be settled through the International Court of Justice, a proposal South Korea has rejected.

South Korea maintains Japan's claims to the islands are unfounded and illegitimate
