Dalziel decision means funding headache for Labour

The Labour Party has got cash to raise as it prepares to fight yet another by-election.

This month's tussle for Ikaroa-Rawhiti has been added to with a by-election now expected in Christchurch East.

Its MP, Lianne Dalziel, will quit Parliament later this year to contest the Christchurch Mayoralty

Labour Party Secretary Tim Barnett accepts by-elections aren't cheap and they're not something the party has budgeted for.

"Essentially we fund by-elections by going back to the party members, or the party bodies, including Members of Parliament, or affiliates and others.

"And we ask them for extra support. So we don't take it out of the core funding for the party."
