Welfare cost review part of larger plot - Labour

Labour is suspicious of the motivation behind the Government's valuation of the welfare system.

The study found the lifetime cost of the current beneficiary population is $78 billion.

Labour MP Jacinda Ardern says such valuations have a history of being unreliable.

"Cabinet papers suggest this was a first step in a wider plan. Now they know how much the future liability is, that if the Ministry of Social Development doesn't perform and reduce those future liabilities, that they could see a cut in their baseline funding," she says.
