Labour changes Afghanistan troops policy

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Wednesday April 18 2012 17:31

Labour appears to have changed its policy on the presence of New Zealand troops in Afghanistan.

Previously Labour has held to the current schedule that will see the Provincial Reconstruction Team based in Bamyan Province withdrawn in 2014.

But Labour's Foreign Affairs spokesman Phil Goff now says the soldiers should be withdrawn over the next 12 months.

He says if Australia is withdrawing its forces from a province that's less stable than Bamyan, then there's absolutely no case for our forces to stay in an area where local authorities are ready to take over.
