Skepticism over Banks' enthusiasm for election reform

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Thursday September 13 2012 6:31

John Banks is being pilloried by his rivals over his support for new reforms of local body elections.

Donation regimes are to be significantly tightened up. It's an area the ACT MP was in hot water in earlier this year regarding his declarations he made about his 2010 Auckland Mayoralty campaign.

John Banks says he's actively encouraged the Government to introduce the Bill.

He says the law as it is, is an ass, and no-one should have to go through what he went through.

But Labour Leader David Shearer is unconvinced by Mr Banks' s enthusiasm for the law change.

He says Mr Banks is welcoming the law change as it gives him a convenient out for his behaviour and his exercise in forgetting about money he received.
