Labour's support for patent legislation shaky

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Thursday September 13 2012 10:35

Labour's threatening to withdraw its support for new patent legislation currently before Parliament.

The party's concerned at the wording of a late amendment to the Bill affecting computer software. The amendment was made by Minister of Commerce Craig Foss.

Labour argues it's ambiguous and could lead to a ban on patenting software becoming unenforceable.

MP Trevor Mallard is asking the Government to agree to the changes Labour wants to make to the wording.

"We will not support later stages of this Bill if the National Party decides to support overseas owned, giant, semi-monopolies against local software designers."
