"Unnecessary" parole hearings to be addressed

By: Felix Marwick | Latest Political News | Wednesday September 26 2012 16:29

Rules governing parole hearings are to be changed.

Justice Minister Judith Collins has introduced new legislation to Parliament aimed at removing what are deemed to be unnecessary parole hearings.

She says for offenders who refuse to acknowledge their offending and have made little or no effort at rehabilitation, it makes no sense to hold parole hearings.

"This will help to reduce the stress caused to victims by having to attend unnecessary parole hearings and relive their traumatic experiences when the offender is not genuinely ready for parole."
