PM accused of misleading public on asset sales

By: Nita Blake-Persen | Latest Political News | Tuesday November 27 2012 14:03

The Maori Council has accused the Prime Minister of misleading the public when announcing plans for the partial sale of state assets.

The council and Waikato iwi are in the High Court in Wellington trying to block the sale of Mighty River Power, while issues around Maori water rights are resolved.

Maori council lawyer Felix Geiringer has told the court that John key played "tricksies" on the New Zealand public, when in a press release he said the decision to sell assets was based on the fact that no one could own water.

Mr Geiringer says in secret the Government knew it was possible to have proprietary rights to water.

He says it's those rights that Maori want recognized, but are not and never have claimed ownership of the water.
