There'll be a last ditch attempt by the Greens today to talk the Government into supporting a bill that'll see casinos have to pay back any money it takes as a result of criminal actions. Green co-leader Metiria Turei is unlikely to have her member's bill pass when it comes before parliament tonight, but she's hoping to change enough MPs' minds. She says her bill forces casinos to take some responsibility for the negative effects of gambling. Metiria Turei's accusing the government of not supporting small businesses. "There are thousands of small businesses who are suffering from theft and from fraud because somebody who works for them is stealing to gamble. "Those businesses need protection, and one way to do it is through my bill." Metiria Turei accuses the government of not wanting to do anything to upset SkyCity casino. Photo: NZ Herald |
