Cryptosporidium spread causes concern

| New Zealand News | Saturday July 28 2012 20:29

A spike in Cryptosporidium cases in the Wellington region has authorities urging people who have been sick to stay away from swimming pools.

Regional public health reports high numbers of the illness reported throughout the region, with many cases having had contact with the Wellington Regional Aquatic centre in Kilbirnie and the Arena Aquatic centre in Porirua.

Medical officer of health Jill McKenzie is urging people not to swim too soon after being sick with diarrhoea because they risk passing their infection to other pool users.

She says pools in the region have been alerted, but while modern treatment systems can remove the bug, people may be affected before it reaches the filters

Ms McKenzie says people should avoid swimming for at least two weeks following a diarrhoea illness.
