Major Tongariro eruptions unlikely - scientists

By: Adam Walker | New Zealand News | Monday August 13 2012 17:54

Scientists believe there won't be any major eruptions in the short term future from Mt Tongariro.

GNS scientists have today put together a week long forecast for the mountain's activity.

Since Monday's eruption, they've analysed ash and gas samples, the seismic activity under the mountain and its history.

Duty volcanologist Steve Sherburn says they believe the mountain will remain quiet.

He says the most likely scenario is no eruption, followed by another of a similar size of smaller than last Monday's, with the least likely being a major eruption.
