Campaign for school speed limits fuelled by death of 7-year-old

By: Aroha Tahau | New Zealand News | Saturday October 27 2012 13:15

A Christchurch mother is calling for a national schools' speed limit following the death of a seven year old boy outside a school in Porirua yesterday.

Lucinda Rees has been petitioning for the speed to be lowered outside all New Zealand schools and she is angry that incidents like yesterday's keep happening.

Ms Rees says she will continue campaigning to put pressure on the government until speed laws are changed.

"This is an accident that shouldn't have happened. It was an accident merely because there are no rules to protect these children. At the moment there are speed limits throughout the country of up to 100k's per hour - these are surely not protecting children."

Ms Rees says she learnt to drive in Germany, where they are far more conscious of protecting children using roads.
