Suggestions an upgrade of the Inland Revenue's computer system should hit two birds with one stone.
The $1 billion upgrade has been announced by the Prime Minister.
AUT law and tax professor Chris Ohms says a single trans-Tasman tax file would allow people to pay taxes here and in Australia.
He says a new computer system is at the heart of that, but regardless, the current system is archaic.
"We've got issues now about what we call the 'Cloud' which is keeping data safe and no doubt that Australia also will be, in time, looking to upgrade its system," he says.
Mr Ohms says it makes a lot of sense to share the benefits and cost with Australia.
