Deerstalkers says tragedies in the forest are avoidable, and should never happen. A funeral has been held for Auckland hunter Alexander McDonald, a week after he was shot dead while deer hunting in south Wairarapa. Tim McCarthy of the Deerstalkers' Association says such shootings aren't really accidental, because rifles don't go off by themselves. He says they're mistakes caused by hunters failing to identify a target beyond all reasonable doubt. In the past ten years eight hunters have died, and three others have been seriously injured.
