Networking on to-do list for NZOC

By: Juliette Sivertsen | New Zealand News | Sunday July 29 2012 8:07

Networking will be on the to-do list for the New Zealand Olympic Committee during the Games.

The NZOC says as a small country, it's important we make our mark on the world stage.

Secretary General Kereyn Smith says the Olympics are not only to showcase our best athletes, but to prepare us as a country for sustained ongoing success.

"We need to be very, very well connected into global agencies such as the IOC, WADA, Commonwealth Games Federation, and others."

Ms Smith says they hope to be able to connect with other influential business people.

High Performance Sport New Zealand says it's important to observe how other teams train.

CEO Alex Bauman says it's important to have those connections to benefit coaches and athletes.

"And also doing a little bit of intelligence gathering while we are here to see what other countries are doing that may apply to New Zealand, or perhaps validating that we're doing the right thing as well."

Mr Bauman says their target of at least 10 Olympic medals remains realistic.
