Tree owners blamed for Taranaki power cut

Related

Strong winds have cut power to around 1,000 Taranaki properties.

Lines operator Powerco says it is working to restore power to its customers in and around coastal and south Taranaki, after most of the outages occurred overnight.

Operations manager Phil Marsh says falling trees caused most of the cuts.

"A large amount of damage this storm has caused to the network could have been avoided if tree owners had professional contractors trim the trees away from power lines before they became a problem."

Phil Marsh says people need to stay away from any downed power lines.
