Avalanche forces ski field closure

By: Aroha Tahau | New Zealand News | Sunday August 5 2012 17:20

An avalanche on Mount Ruapehu has closed the upper half of the Turoa ski field this afternoon.

However, no one was caught up in the snow slide and there have been no reports of injury.

Communications Manager of Turoa Ski Area, Annah Dowsett, says customers have been moved to the lower slopes as a precaution.

"It's not a concern - it's just with the warmer temperatures and the recent snowfall hadn't bonded to the snow underneath, so we're business as usual. It's fantastic skiing."

About thirty hikers walking towards the summit were sent back down the mountain by a patrol team.
