Fathers' Day has come around again, and the Families Commission is taking the opportunity to highlight the changing shape of New Zealand families. It says more fathers than ever before are now the main caregivers for their children. Policy Analyst Francis Luketina says the group has been growing steadily over the past 30 years. "Most people think that these people are a rarity, but actually there's quite a few of them. They're 17 percent of all of the sole parent families and in fact that makes up more than 24,000 single fathers who are looking after their children." The Commission says Fathers' Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge a group of fathers who are often overlooked. Photo: stock.xchng |
